Ed Freiling Dead at 77

Edward C. Freiling, Ph.D., founder of Scientists for life, died January 22, 2000 at his home near San Francisco at the age of 77. Dr. Freiling was a resident of Fredericksburg from 1969 to 1987 when he was a research scientist for the Navy at Dahlgren.

In addition to founding Scientists for Life, the pro-life pioneer helped organize the Frederickburg Chapter of VSHL in the summer of 1971. He was a vital part of VSHL's leadership for many years before moving to California.

The Position of Modern Science on the Beginning of Human Life was developed from a 1975 draft presentation by Dr. Freiling, in consultation with Thomas L. Johnson, Ph.D., Professor of Biology at Mary Washington College. The draft was submitted to the members of Scientists for Life for comments and additional supporting material and the paper was revised before being published in booklet form. The booklet's fourth printing in 1984 is still available for a $2.00 contribution from Sun Life, 2399 Cool Springs Road, Thaxton, VA 24174.
