Bateman Dead at 72Virginia’s pro-life 1st District Congressman Herbert H. Bateman died in his sleep on Monday, Sept. 11, 2000. Earlier this year, he had announced his intention not to seek a tenth term in the House of Representatives. Rep. Bateman was elected to the Virginia State Senate in 1967 and served there for 15 years until his election to Congress. He considered it his greatest honor to represent America’s First District and to serve as a representative of all Virginians. He was known for his ability to build consensus on legislation in Congress and he was a master of the legislative and parliamentary process. A former legislative aide on defense matters, James Hickey, said of Congressman Bateman, "He taught me the most important lesson I ever learned in Washington. . . Today’s opponent will be tomorrow’s ally. He’s right. You can’t hold grudges. If half the people in this town could learn that lesson, this town would run a lot smoother." "Herb will be remembered for the lifetime of service he gave to his country and fellow citizens," said retiring Rep. Thomas J. Bliley Jr. (R-7), who sponsored a resolution honoring Bateman. "A nation is indebted to the unselfish work of Herb Bateman. You are in our prayers. May God bless you and your family."
