Pro-Life Democrats Stiffed by Party

The organization “Democrats for Life of America” is struggling to get recognized by their party but without success.

According to Roll Call (June 3, 2003), “the web site of the Democratic National Committee links internet users to the sites of 279 political and advocacy organizations, labor unions, religious groups and government agencies.” However, the DNC has refused to add a link for this organization that is dedicated to electing pro-life Democrats to office. The attempt has been underway for almost a year but the DNC will only say that it is “under review.”

Senator Ben Nelson (D-NE) wrote DNC Chairman Terry McAuliffe urging the party to add Democrats for Life to its web site and 17 House Democrats also wrote him defending the pro-life group. Roll Call reported that the House members said in their May 14 letter that the DNC’s refusal amounted to “ostracism” of loyal Democrats and contradicted the party’s 2000 platform abortion plank which claimed respect for individual conscience on the abortion issue. “Actions speak louder than words,” they wrote.

Included in the 279 links that the DNC does provide on its web site are seven organizations devoted to support of abortion rights and 48 women’s groups, most of whom are known to be pro-abortion.
