Abortions Decline

The latest abortion study released by the Alan Guttmacher Institute (AGI), a special affiliate of the Planned Parenthood Federation of America, shows that the number of abortions nationwide have declined 13% between 1992 and 1995, to approximately 1.36 million, and remained virtually the same for 1996 (at 1.37 million). These are the latest years for which figures are available.

"The National Right to Life Committee (NRLC) applauds the efforts of pro-lifers across the country who have worked to educate Americans about the truth of abortion," stated Laura Echevarria, director of Media Relations for NRLC. "When people are told the truth about abortion ù that it takes the life of an unborn child ù they reject abortion."

The study also showed that the number of facilities offering abortions decreased 14% between 1992 and 1996, nearly twice the decline of the previous four years. That left 2,042 abortion providers, nearly one-third fewer than the peak number in 1982. In Virginia, the number of abortion providers has fallen 30% since the early 1980s, from 81 to 57, according to the AGI study.
