Pro-Life Gains for Virginia

U.S. Senate

Virginia voters turned two term Senator Chuck Robb out of office on November 7 by electing Republican George Allen with 52.3% of the vote. This result was particularly satisfying to pro-lifers since Senator Robb had a 100% pro-abortion voting record, including even opposition to the ban on the inhuman partial-birth abortion procedure.

House of Representatives

Virginia also gained a pro-life vote in the House of Representatives. The 2nd district seat previously held by pro-abortion Congressman Owen Pickett was won by pro-life Republican candidate Ed Schrock by a 52% - 48% margin over his Democratic opponent. In other Virginia races for open seats, pro-life Republican Jo Ann Davis won 57.5% of the vote against a Democrat and two Independent opponents to take the 1st district seat previously held by the late pro-life Congressman Herb Bateman; and pro-life Republican Eric Cantor trounced his Democratic opponent by winning more than two-thirds of the votes to replace 7th district Congressman Tom Bliley. Virginia’s other eight incumbent Congressmen were all reelected.

Unfortunately, the national Congressional results do not match those in Virginia. It appears that the pro-life cause lost some ground in both the Senate and the House but the actual counts will vary depending on which issue is being considered.

Presidential Vote

In Presidential balloting, Virginian’s favored the pro-life Bush-Cheney ticket by more than eight percentage points over the pro-abortion Gore-Lieberman ticket (52.5% - 44.4%). While almost all of the post-election attention has been focused on Florida, where pro-lifers’ prayers were answered on Dec. 13, pro-lifers here can take pride in Virginia’s 13 electoral votes for Bush which were just as critical to his election.
