US House & Senate Seats Up for Election November 5
Virginia voters will elect one United States Senator and eleven United States Representatives to Congress on Tuesday November 5. In a surprising number of races, the incumbent has no major party opposition. In several of the cases where there are races between the major parties, the Political Action Committees of VSHL, or of the National Right to Life Committee, have announced endorsements or recommendations.
Republican Senator John Warner is running for his fifth term in office, with no opposition from the Democratic Party. His voting record on pro-life issues over the past six-year term is in a related article.
Following is a rundown of the Virginia races for the House of Representatives.
- Several Republican Representatives with solid pro-life records have no Democratic Party opposition. They are Jo Ann Davis, Ed Schrock, Randy Forbes and Bob Goodlatte, representing the 1st, 2nd, 4th, and 6th Congressional Districts respectively.
- In the 3rd Congressional District, pro-abortion Representative Bobby Scott is running unopposed.
- In the 5th Congressional District, pro-life incumbent Representative Virgil Goode, who recently switched his status from Independent to Republican, is being challenged by a Democratic opponent, Charlottesville Vice-Mayor Meredith Richards. Congressman Goode has been endorsed by the National Right to Life Political Action Committee based upon his sterling pro-life voting record in Congress and previously in the Virginia Senate.
- Pro-life incumbent Representative Eric Cantor has been endorsed by the VSHL Political Action Committee (VSHL PAC) as he faces opposition in the 7th Congressional District. Rep. Cantor is being challenged by former Georgia Congressman Ben “Cooter” Jones whose voting record from 1989-1992 supported unresticted abortion.
- Republican Scott Tate is challenging pro-abortion incumbent Representative Jim Moran in the 8th Congressional District.
- Pro-Life challenger Jay K. Katzen is running against pro-abortion incumbent Representative Rick Boucher in the 9th Congressional District. Mr. Katzen has a consistent pro-life voting record from his years in the Virginia House of Delegates and has been endorsed by the VSHL PAC.
- Pro-Life incumbent Representative Frank Wolf in the 10th Congressional District has a Democratic challenger, John B. Stevens, Jr. VSHL PAC once again has recommended Rep. Wolf for reelection.
- In the 11th Congressional District, Republican Tom Davis is running without Democratic Party opposition.
Voting records on pro-life issues are shown in detail in the voting table for all eleven incumbent Virginia Representatives.
