Voting Record for Senator Warner

Senator John Warner is running for reelection to the United States Senate with no major party opposition.

During the past six-year term, Senator Warner supported the ban on partial-birth abortions and voted consistently to support the ban on abortions in military medical facilities and the ban on abortion coverage in Federal employees’ health insurance plans. He also favored the Child Custody Protection Act. He voted several times against the McCain-Feingold “campaign finance reform” bill but switched this year and supported the Shays-Meehan bill that passed and became law (see House vote #14 for explanation).

In 1999, Senator Warner voted for a non-binding Senate resolution endorsing the 1973 Supreme Court decision, Roe v. Wade, that legalized abortion on demand. That same year, he voted against an amendment requiring detailed reporting on transactions (e.g., sales) involving the body parts of babies killed by any method of abortion. In 1997, he voted for funding fetal tissue research that included tissue or organs taken from induced abortions, and supported additional funding for population control programs overseas that did not include a prohibition on promoting legalization of abortion.
