Pro-life Candidates Run For US House

Three veteran members of the U. S. House of Representatives who consistently vote in opposition to the right to life are being opposed in the November 2, 2004 election by pro-life challengers. In the third congressional district, former delegate Winsome Sears of Norfolk is running against pro-abortion Rep. Bobby Scott, Democrat of Newport News. In the Virginia House of Delegates, Del. Sears was known for articulating her pro-life views in committee and on the House floor.

In Northern Virginia’s eighth district, pro-abortion Democratic Rep. James Moran is being opposed by Lisa Marie Cheney, pro-life Republican candidate of Alexandria. Independent candidate James Hurysz is also on the ballot. Pro-life Republican Kevin Triplett is challenging pro-abortion Rep. Rick Boucher in Virginia’s southwest ninth district. Both challenger and incumbent are from Abingdon. The three pro-life challengers have been endorsed by the political action committees of Virginia Society for Human Life and National Right to Life.

Pro-life Incumbents Challenged

Three NRLC PAC endorsed Republican incumbents with solid pro-life voting records have pro-abortion Democratic opponents. Rep. Randy Forbes of Chesapeake is being challenged by Jonathan Menefee in district four. Forbes has been a leader in promoting pro-life legislation, first in the Virginia General Assembly before being elected to Congress. Pro-life Rep. Virgil Goode of Rocky Mount is being opposed by pro-abortion candidate Al Weed of Nelson County in district five. Rep. Goode has the rare distinction of a 100 percent pro-life voting record, first as a Democrat, then as an Independent, and now as a Republican legislator. He served in the Senate of the Virginia General Assembly as a Democrat for many years before running for Congress.

In the tenth house district, Rep. Frank Wolf of Vienna is being opposed by pro-abortion Democrat James Socas of McLean. In massive district advertising, Socas and his supporters are harshly criticizing Wolf’s 100 percent pro-life voting record.

Republican Rep. Tom Davis of Falls Church is opposed by Democrat Ken Longmyer and Independent Joseph Oddo in district eleven. Three pro-life incumbents are running without major party competition. Rep. Jo Ann Davis (R-1), Bob Goodlatte (R-6) and Eric Cantor (R-7) have solid voting records in support of the right to life. Independent candidates are on the ballot in districts one and seven.

Open Seat in District Two

Pro-life Congressman’s Ed Schrock’s announcement that he would not run for reelection has resulted in the Virginia’s only open congressional seat. Republican candidate Thelma Davis of Norfolk has a solid pro-life voting record as a member of the Virginia House of Delegates and is opposed by Democrat David Ashe of Virginia Beach.
