Contact Congress about the Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Act
In response to Virginia Governor's obnoxious comments about allowing babies who have been born to die, there has been a renewed push to pass the Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act through Congress.
Unfortunately, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is preventing a vote on the Born-Alive Abortion Survivor Act.
But there is a way to bypass Speaker Pelosi to bring it to the floor of the House of Representatives for a vote and that is a discharge petition. In order for the discharge petition to be successful, it needs to have 218 House Members sign it. So far 199 Members have signed the discharge petition for the Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Act so we only need 19 more.
So far four Members from Virginia have signed the discharge petition. Which means that seven Virginia Members have not.
Please contact your Member of Congress and ask them to sign the discharge petition or thank them for doing it already.
Members who have NOT signed the Discharge Petition
Elaine Luria (D-2) (202) 225-4215 Robert Scott (D-3) (202) 225-8351 Donald McEachin (D-4) (202) 225-6365 Abigail Spanberger (D-7) (202) 225-2815 Don Beyer (D-8) (202) 225-4376 Jennifer Wexton (D-10) (202) 225-5136 Gerry Connolly (D-11) (202) 225-1492
Members who have signed the Discharge Petition
Rob Wittman (R-1) (202) 225-4261 Denver Riggleman (R-5) (202) 225-4711 Ben Cline (R-6) (202) 225-5431 Morgan Griffith (R-9) (202) 225-3861
National Right to Life has provided a web link where all you need to do is enter your zip code and then you can send a pre-written message to your Member of Congress urging them to sign the discharge petition
Please contact your Member of Congress today and let them know you want them to support the discharge petition. We need to keep the pressure on both the United States Congress and the General Assembly that we oppose infanticide and abortion.
Pro-abortion ERA promoters fail to force a vote in the
Virginia House of Delegates
The pro-life members of the Republican House of Delegates Caucus successfully blocked multiple attempts to force a vote on the Equal Rights Amendment this week as the 2019 session wraps up.
The last-ditch efforts crafted by ERA forces were two resolutions from pro-abortion Delegates Ayala and Simon written to up-end the House rules just to force an ERA vote on the Floor. These resolutions were rejected: Del. Ayala's on a 50-50 vote with Republican Del. David Yancey joining the Democrats, and Del. Simon's by a 51-49 vote along party lines.
A resolution from pro-life Republican Majority Leader Todd Gilbert was designed to protect the rules of the House to require a two thirds majority for any future rules change. In a parliamentary move, Del. Gilbert urged his colleagues from both parties to reject his resolution, to show their disdain for the type of gamesmanship being used by ERA proponents in their attempts to up-end and change the rules just to benefit their issue. It was indeed rejected unanimously.
Yesterday pro-abortion ERA delegates attempted to hijack a bill from pro-life Senator Amanda Chase that was an abortion neutral statement on the facts of equality already in Virginia law. Her bill was nearly amended on the floor by Del. Toscano and other pro-abortion Delegates from the Democratic Caucus to turn her bill into the Equal Rights Amendment. Fortunately, their effort was stopped by alert pro-life members of the Republican Caucus. Sen. Chase has since struck her bill for this year.
“The ERA forces have vowed to use this issue in upcoming Virginia elections. They are not telling Virginians the truth about how the ERA would dismantle the strong pro-life laws that are in place in the Commonwealth. Nor will they admit during these candidate debates that the ERA will require Virginians and all Americans pay for all abortions with taxpayer funds.” stated Olivia Gans Turner, VSHL President.
“Pro-life people will continue educating our communities about the real dangers behind this so- called equal rights amendment. There is nothing equal about a law that strips away the right to life for all unborn children permanently!” stated Turner.
Virginia Society for Human Life is the oldest state-wide pro-life organization in the nation with chapters throughout the Commonwealth supporting life issues and the Virginia affiliate of the National Right to Life Committee.
Please email and call your State Senator!
There will be an important amendment offered on HB 1979, the bill dealing with expanding surrogacy options in Virginia, on the floor of the Virginia Senate on Monday.
This amendment does not address any other aspects of the bill that many have raised concerns about, but does address a very real danger of the surrogacy laws in Virginia that currently allows contracts to require an abortion if the couple arranging the surrogacy contract no longer want the baby for any reason.
These contracts can require that if multiple babies are implanted successfully, a selective reduction abortion be performed to reduce the number to one or two as the couple creating the contract wishes -- or that an abortion must be done if the sex of the baby is wrong. This means that the state is placed in the position of requiring that an abortion on an innocent baby must be performed based on the contract.
A selective reduction abortion is a dreadful example of the cruelty of every abortion. When there are multiple babies growing in the womb abortionists too often insist that they need to kill one or more of the babies. In order to do it a lethal dose of potassium chloride is injected into the unborn baby's or babies' hearts. Death is caused by a massive heart attack. The amendment, which was developed by VSHL's legislative team, renders any such contract arrangement null and void in the Commonwealth. It is an important thing to do. We are asking folks to call/email only the Republican Senators by Monday morning and ask them to support the amendment to be offered by Sen. Peake to HB 1979 on the floor.
Pro-Life EVENT in Richmond on Thursday!
Join Hundreds of other pro-life Virginians at the State Capitol
Thursday, February 7th, at 10 am.
Let’s make sure our Delegates and Senators, Governor Northam, Lt. Gov. Justin Fairfax and Attorney General Herring all hear and see us standing up for the most helpless of all Virginians, unborn children!
After the speeches you are encouraged to go to your legislators' offices and tell them you oppose all pro-abortion efforts in Virginia, including the ERA, which will eliminate all pro-life laws!
Pro-life Press Conference & Rally at 11:30 am Saturday!
UPDATE: Here is video of VSHL President Olivia Gans Turner speaking at the Rally.
The rally will be in response to the shocking comments of Governor Ralph Northam and the proposed legislation of Del. Kathy Tran that would have stripped away pro-life protections and allowed unrestricted abortion up to birth.
Saturday, February 2nd, 11:30 am to 1:00 pm. Corner of Laurel Crest Drive and Silverbrook Road, Lorton.
The event was to precede a previously-scheduled town hall by Delegate Tran, Senator Scott Surovell, and Senator George Barker. Unwilling to face their constituents and the public, the three pro-abortion legislators decided to cancel the town hall.
The rally and press conference will still take place! All are welcome and encouraged to attend if possible. The event will be a peaceful one, and orderly.
We ask that you come and present the best face of the pro-life movement, calm and compassionate for the most helpless among us. Let's put our best face forward tomorrow and prove that Virginia is pro-life!
Also, Please join other pro-lifers in Richmond this coming week The Commonwealth Rally for Life will happen on the grounds of the State Capitol by the Bell Tower at 10:00 am on Thursday, February 7th.
Come help us send a message to our pro-life legislators that we support them and their efforts to defend the unborn. We also need to make it clear to the pro-abortion members of the General Assembly that we are watching and listening and that the elections are coming.
Virginia's Governor has Shocked the Nation with His Cruelty
Governor Ralph Northam appeared on a Northern Virginia radio show today and stunned all those listening when he defended the bill that was introduced by Del. Tran this year to allow abortion up to birth in the Commonwealth with absolutely no restrictions.
Even more shocking was that the pro-abortion Governor, who has vowed to sign a bill like this if given a chance, appeared to sanction the killing of a newborn infant if the mother had wanted the child aborted! Is there no limit to the depth of cruelty and depravity that some of our elected officials will sink to? You can read more about his comments in this article on National Review.
The terrifying truth is that abortion is legal in most states through all nine months, even in Virginia, but many states have placed some limits on how and when an abortion can occur. While Virginia does allow them at least there are some provisions that exist regarding the circumstances so that thankfully the number of abortions in the later months of pregnancy are few. However, each of those abortions is one innocent human life and VSHL wants to see them banned along with all abortions.
The new ethos of the pro-abortion lobby is go all in for every abortion, even at nine months of pregnancy and strip the states of any pro-life laws on the books. Abortion must become a sacred human right in our state Constitutions!
New York has become the standard for every other pro-abortion governor and legislators.
The hearing in the House Courts of Justice Subcommittee that saw the defeat of HB 2491, Delegate Trans heinous bill, simply cast a much needed light on the dark mind of those in the General Assembly that see abortion as the ultimate good for women and who have absolutely no respect for the help[less lives of the unborn who perish in every abortion. You can watch the video yourself at this link.
Pro-abortion Democrats believe they are within striking distance of their goal. They think that the people of Virginia will be persuaded support their agenda to become another New York with no pro-life laws on the books! We must prove them wrong!
Today on the Floor of the House of Delegates, Speaker Kirk Cox did the unheard of and stepped away from Chair to address the pro-life issue from his Delegates seat and to avow his unwavering support for the pro-life cause and commitment to protecting the pro-life laws in Virginia. Three other delegates also rose to share their own commitment to preserving pro-life laws and preventing any effort to overturn the ones we have. You can watch the Speakers comments at this link. Make sure to email Speaker Cox and thank him for his strong pro-life stand.
Del. Todd Gilbert also calmly addressed criticism from the minority leader, Del. Eileen Filler-Corn, about how the hearing was handled. Del. Scott Garrett shared his reasons for his pro-life commitment which included his experiences as a trauma surgeon, and the experience of his own son’s birth as a premature baby sixteen years ago.
The difference between the two sides of the House of Delegates is very clear. There are far too many pro-abortion Delegates ready and willing to do the bidding of the abortion industry at the expense of the women and unborn children of Virginia. We must not look away. Virginians must decide the direction we shall go, and it must not be in the wake of New York!
Please contact your State Senator and Delegate and urge them to oppose the Equal Rights Amendment to the US Constitution.
The ERA, as currently written, would eliminate virtually every single regulation on abortion including over turning partial-birth abortion ban, mandate funding for abortion-on-demand, etc.
Please see the links below on the General Assembly to find out who your State Senator and Delegate are and their phone number and email address. The General Assembly 2019 session will be starting in a few days so now is the time to contact your Senator and Delegate.
Re: ERA fight revived in Virginia and threatens Pro-life laws
As you are probably aware, in recent weeks there have been a series of news articles and commentary about renewed efforts around the Commonwealth to resurrect the long defeated so- called Equal Rights Amendment. These commentaries suggest that there is a groundswell of support for this questionable endeavor, when in fact the support is coming from well-organized forces, including the pro-abortion groups NARAL and Planned Parenthood. What all of them have failed to share with the public is the very real connection between the ERA and abortion!
As you may know, there have been several efforts recently to gain support in the Commonwealth at the local level from County Boards of Supervisors, local PTA’s and other public associations. At this date some have voted to support the ERA, but thanks to alert local citizens in one county, Prince William, the motion to support the ERA was defeated. Other counties have passed this motion but have done so with stealth and before allowing public comment.
Once again, the ERA has been filed to be introduced in the 2019 General Assembly. This issue will be a priority issue for VSHL.
The time of Holidays, family and celebrations of the gift of Life draw to a climax this week. All of us at VSHL would like to wish everyone of you and yours a very joyful Christmas and a Happy New Year.
At this time of the year we draw together with those we love and share the hope that the new year will see more respect for every human life in our country and Virginia. Pro-lifers realize that each life saved is a gift to the world and irreplaceable.
There is so much to celebrate as the old year closes as well. Victories at the General Assembly in 2018 mean that Virginia’s pro-life laws are continuing to save lives and that means abortions continue to decline in the Commonwealth. In addition, dangerous attempts to expand doctors’ abilities to end life sustaining treatment at will were prevented by hard won protections that respect the rights of patients and their families. VSHL’s team worked hard to ensure all these things and more throughout the year.
Still, pro-life Virginians also know that the struggle to protect innocent human life is a year-round business. As we raise a toast to 2018, we are facing extreme new challenges and threats from pro-abortion forces. The specter of the Equal Rights Amendment has risen form the distant past to once again threaten every pro-life law we have in place and make it impossible to pass any new ones. This is not a threat we will take lightly, nor will we be fooled by new rhetoric that dismisses our fears as paranoia or old-fashioned ideas.
We understand that many younger people may not realize the very real legal danger in the so-called Equal Rights Amendment, but VSHL will do everything possible to educate our legislators and the public about these threats to unborn children and their mothers.
My personal wish for all of you on this joyful day is that you will be surrounded by those that matter most to you and that your hearts will be blessed by this season of love and life. I know you will continue to share all your talents and time to help VSHL be successful at our shared goal of protecting all innocent human life at every stage.
Thank you for all you do to save lives in Virginia. We are in this together!
The Virginia Society for Human Life (VSHL) has a chance to be handed up to $20,000. That's right twenty thousand dollars!
That's twenty thousand that can -- and will - immediately be put to use in our ongoing efforts to protect and defend the the unborn, those with disabilities or serious illness, and the vulnerable elderly.
A group of loyal VSHL supporters has offered to match dollar-for-dollar up to $20,000 whatever VSHL can raise until December 31st, 2018.
These funds are vital to helping VSHL keep our important pro-life work going strong in 2019. Planned Parenthood and their pro-abortion allies have launched an all-out assault both in the courts and in the legislature on all of our pro-life laws here in Virginia. They want to eliminate even the Partial-Birth Abortion Ban and to force taxpayer funding of abortion-on-demand. They are even trying to resurrect the pro-abortion Equal Rights Amendment to the US Constitution by having Virginia be the 38th state to pass it. Unfortunately, most voters don't remember the dangers the ERA poses to the unborn so we must increase our education efforts about how the ERA threatens every pro-life law across the country. Virginia is at ground zero of these efforts. Our Youth education programs include the annual Oratory Contest and Camp Joshua, our pro-life camp for Virginia teens.
Which is why we absolutely must meet this deadline to ensure we receive the full $20,000 Matching Fund.
or the VSHL Education Fund (tax-deductible). Click on one of the buttons below to donate online or mail your check payable to either VSHL or VSHL Education Fund (tax-deductible) to VSHL 6767 Forest Hill Ave, Suite 304 Richmond, VA 23225.
VSHL will be very active in opposing the pro-abortion ERA. To help educate Virginia's about the ERA, its history and what its impact will be if approved we will be posting information on our website from a variety of sources. Here are a couple of quotes and link to a the full article by former Delegate Bob Marshall explaining the history of the ERA.
Reviving the Equal Rights
Amendment to Keep Abortion Legal
Charlotte Lozier Institute | December 21, 2018.
By Robert Marshall
"Many Americans think of the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) as an issue from another era in American history. And so it is – a 22-word amendment to the Constitution first proposed in 1972, fiercely debated, but failing of ratification by the deadlines Congress established, then extended by majority vote, for it. But for some advocates, including prominent politicians, the ERA is very much alive and will become a part of our Constitution, they think, if just three more states “agree” to it, instead of the 38 normally required for an amendment to become part of the Constitution. And one of those advocates is on the verge of taking a powerful post where he might make all the difference."
"Protecting Roe at Any Cost
At the June 2018 shadow hearings, Nadler made clear his concerns have much to do with issues besides equal rights. He noted that, “We cannot trust the Supreme Court not to go back … what the Supreme Court giveth, the Supreme Court can taketh away … we are worried now that another Supreme Court nominee … might overturn Roe v. Wade …” "

In recent weeks there have been a series of news articles and commentary about renewed efforts around the Commonwealth to resurrect the long-defeated so-called Equal Rights Amendment. What all of them have failed to share with the public is the very real connection between the ERA and abortion!
VSHL was on the front lines opposing the original ERA effort in the 1970’s. Legal experts then and now continue to share their alarm that the ERA does pose a very serious threat to pro-life laws. A recent case from New Mexico proves that there is grave reason to be concerned.
Let me be clear: while VSHL does not take a position on the merits of the ERA itself, we have a longstanding position opposing the ERA unless there is a neutralizing amendment attached that will ensure that the ERA could not be used to dismantle existing pro-life laws, prevent new ones, or require the use of taxpayer funds to pay for abortions.
This link (https://vshl.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=f2564974ed493b8ba9fc4e85a&id=211573645a&e=2292397a14) is a good simple analysis of the objections VSHL and NRLC have with the current version of the ERA. This suggested amendment, developed by National Right to Life years ago, has been opposed by advocates for the ERA across the country and the federal level. In recent years, states that have passed the ERA have seen their law challenged and some have been forced to pay for abortions. Access to abortion has been defined as a right and pro-life laws as a hindrance to the application on equal rights. Under the ERA, only unborn girls and boys are to be discriminated against.
There have been several efforts to gain support at the local level from County Boards of Supervisors. At this date some have voted to support the ERA, but thanks to alert local citizens in one county, Prince William, the motion to support the ERA was defeated.
Find out if your county or city has endorsed the ERA at this link (https://vshl.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=f2564974ed493b8ba9fc4e85a&id=eb52e1f5a0&e=2292397a14) . If your county has not yet endorsed a motion on the ERA there is still time to make your voice heard! VSHL needs your help to prevent more counties from voting at the local level to show support for the unamended ERA. Please ask your county supervisors if they have been approached to support the ERA. Then let VSHL know what you have been told. Ask them to oppose any such vote of support in your county.
Another critical action that you can take right now is to contact your own Delegate and State Senator to ask them to oppose the ERA if it comes up during the 2019 General Assembly session. Please ask them to make sure that this does not move forward unless the abortion-neutralizing language has been added.
Ask your representatives to oppose the ERA unless the following language is added: “Nothing in this article [the ERA] shall be construed to grant, secure, or deny any right relating to abortion or the funding thereof.”
Remember, VSHL will have to do a great deal of education to help our neighbors and friends, as well as lobbying our legislators, understand the threat in the ERA. Please help us do that by sending a donation today. Thank you.
On behalf of the entire Board of Directors, staff and volunteers at VSHL, I want to wish you all a very Happy Thanksgiving. May you be surrounded by loved ones and enjoy the festivities of the day. There is so much to be thankful this year. Pro-lifers continue to advance the cause of life on many fronts, here in our state and nationally. Lives are being saved and protected from abortion, and from threats of assisted suicide and removal of life-sustaining treatment right here in the Commonwealth. Efforts to advance the pro-abortion agenda were successfully stopped in the General Assembly last winter. Abortions continue to drop in Virginia thanks to protective pro-life laws. The proposition to introduce assisted suicide was rejected by members of the JCHC earlier this month. And just this week the proposal to endorse the pro-abortion ERA in Prince William County failed due to public outcry. Pro-life values are on a roll!
Personally, I want to tell you how thankful I am for the support you give VSHL. When VSHL asks you to step up and show our strength either with elected officials or on public occasions you are there. I cannot stress how important that is. We, you and I, are the voices of the unborn and other vulnerable lives. They depend on our active involvement. The vote in PWC proves that very clearly. It was the power of the people in action!
So, as the pies come out of the oven and the football games go on, please remember the lives that depend on us everyday to stand up and fight for life. We are thankful for the gift of every human life. VSHL will continue to be the force for good at the General Assembly and everywhere that life is threatened. Thank you, dear friends, today and always. Olivia Gans Turner President Update on the ERA motion in Prince William County
The motion, introduce by Supervisor Principi, failed for lack of a second. The majority of the Board of Supervisors agreed that this was not an appropriate matter to be handled by the county. It is a matter for the General Assembly.
VSHL's position is, that unless abortion-neutralizing language is put on the ERA, it is not safe and will threaten pro-life laws and force the use of Virginia tax dollars to pay for abortion, as has happened in other states.
During two hours of testimony, 35 people spoke in opposition to the ERA, and 24 in support. The voice of the community made a deep impact on the Board members. Several of them spoke to the effect that calls and emails, along with the thoughtful testimonies pointing out the dangers in the current ERA, had on their decision not to support the ERA at this time.
Be aware that this ERA train is making its way around Virginia. Hopefully, it will receive a similar response whereever it goes next. Be alert in your own community. Contact VSHL if you hear that plans are being made to attempt this where you live. Giving Tuesday notice!
VSHL will be participating in the Facebook Giving Tuesday project on Nov. 27. We invite all of you who are on Facebook to participate. To help VSHL please go to the Virginia Society for Human Life Facebook page on that day and make any donation you’d like to raise funds for VSHL’s educational efforts in the months ahead. Please share the link with your pro-life friends. Even a small donation helps! Thank you.
After the Election
Election nights are always challenging for pro-lifers. This year was no exception. We understand that elections have consequences. Lives really do hang in the balance. As Wednesday morning rolled around it was clear that Virginians had lost three key Congressional races and that one of the state's two pro-abortion Senators was elected again.
There is positive news as well, as two new pro-life candidates were elected in the two open seats and two of Virginia’s most faithful pro-life representatives won re-election.
Congratulations to Congressmen Rob Wittman (1st District) and Morgan Griffith (9th District) on being re-elected as pro-life members of Congress.
Congratulations to pro-life Ben Cline (6th District) and Denver Riggleman (5th District) on being elected to serve in Congress.
Sadly, pro-life Congresswoman Barbara Comstock has lost her race for the 10th District to pro-abortion State Senator Jennifer Wexton. Congressmen Dave Brat (7th) and Scott Taylor (2nd) also lost to their pro-abortion opponents. Both were close races. In the 7^th District, pro-abortion Abigail Spanberger defeated Rep. Brat. In the 2^nd District Rep. Taylor was defeated by another pro-abortion woman, Elaine Luria.
All three of the Congressional races where pro-lifers lost had been special targets of pro-abortion forces and other special interest groups, who poured money into the districts to get pro-abortion candidates elected. Sadly, they were successful. While many factors were involved in those losses, there is no doubt that pro-abortion groups will be happy.
Virginia Society for Human Life is very grateful to all three of these out-going representatives and their time of steadfast service to protect the unborn. They will be sorely missed. While it is very sad to see solid pro-life candidates defeated this year, there is good news from the 8th District House of Delegates District special election: pro-life Joe McNamara has won. He will help hold the pro-life balance in the General Assembly.
Now we need to gear up for the two special elections for Delegate Cline's and Senator Wexton's seats before the 2019 General Assembly. We have a chance to add to the pro-life vote in the Virginia State Senate and once more we must hold on to the one-vote pro-life majority in the House of Delegates.
Here in Virginia it’s always election season and so it is again. Please help VSHL get out the word regarding these two upcoming special elections when they are announced. VSHL PAC will make endorsements and will send you information as it becomes available. Thank you. Thank you also to everyone who shared information about this election with family and friends. Thank you for voting pro-life as well! You are an indispensable part of the pro-life team in Virginia. Richmond Legislative Update
The final meeting of 2018 for the Virginia Joint Commission on Health Care (JCHC) took place on the morning after election day in Richmond. The good news is that after two years of debate about how to craft a legislative proposal to legalize doctor-prescribed death in Virginia, the Commission voted to protect our law preventing assisted suicide.
The Commission members voted to "take no action" which was the pro-life vote. The motion passed by one vote, along party lines except for JCHC Chair Democratic Sen. Rosalyn Dance voting with the Republican members. Co-chair Del. Scott Garrett, a physician himself, spoke with great passion to the value of each life and the grave danger of introducing the power to end lives by physician-assisted suicide into society. Thank you to all the members who voted to protect life in the meeting.
Special thanks to Congressman-elect Ben Cline, who made the extra special effort to attend Wednesday's meeting the morning after his election to Congress, just to make voting for life his last official act as a member of the Virginia House of Delegates. Thank you! Olivia Gans Turner and VSHL Office Manager Maggie Disney with Congressman-elect Ben Cline On a special note to all of you, VSHL would like to thank those of you who took the time to send messages to the JCHC expressing your thoughts in opposition to expanding access to assisted suicide in the Commonwealth. It had real impact. The JCHC received close to 3,000 messages opposing assisted suicide and only 368 in favor of legalizing it. VSHL also appreciated the cooperative support from various disabilities rights groups, who recognized the threat inherent in this proposal. As we wind down the year, please keep VSHL in your plans for giving. Your support is essential to the work we do across Virginia. We are deeply aware that you make VSHL strong. Thank you.
In just a few days we will once again be able to cast a vote to save unborn children from cruel and violent death by abortion. Who you vote for on Tuesday, November 6 will make a difference in what laws can be protected and new ones can be passed, both at the federal and state level!
All of Virginia’s Congressional seats are in play as well as one of our US Senator’s seat. Virginia has a strong pro-life delegation to Washington DC. Out of our 11 congressional districts, we have been represented by 7 pro-life Representatives. We must not let pro-abortion forces replace any of those seats with pro-abortion individuals. Your Votes can prevent that from happening.
Last year Virginians proved to the country just how important one vote can be. The race for the control of the Virginia House of Delegates was decided by exactly one vote! Now this November we must hold on to pro-life control in the House. There is a special race in the 8th district, Salem-Roanoke area, which will once again decide the control of Virginia’s House of Delegates. This race will also decide if VSHL can protect the strong prolife laws that we have worked so hard to gain over the years. Pro-life Joe McNamara has been endorsed in that race by the VSHLPAC. If you have friends or family in that district, please make sure they get to the polls on Tuesday.
Below you will see a list of the Congressional candidates endorsed by VSHLPAC this year. Please share it with your friends and family.
Thank you for helping VSHL get out the pro-life vote. We can’t do this without you!
There will still be a very slim pro-life majority in both houses, a one vote majority in fact. Nobody
should take these votes for granted. Each bill will mean a fight. Links to find your Senator or Delegate and their contact information are below.
Please contact your Senator and Delegate to let them know you want them to oppose taxpayer funding of abortion and to oppose any efforts to repeal or weaken pro-life laws like the Women's-Right-to-Know and protections for the sick and disabled.
The Virginia Society for Human Life (VSHL) has a chance to be handed up to $26,000. That's right twenty-six thousand dollars!
That's twenty-six thousand that can -- and will - immediately be put to use in our ongoing efforts to protect and defend the the unborn, those with disabilities or serious illness, and the vulnerable elderly.
A group of loyal VSHL supporters has offered to match dollar-for-dollar up to $26,000 whatever VSHL can raise until January 22nd, 2018.
These funds are vital to helping VSHL keep our important pro-life work going strong in 2018. With the disappointing recent elections, we expect the 2018 Legislative Session to be facing an all-out assault from Planned Parenthood and their radical pro-abortion allies in their efforts to repeal the ultrasound law, Women's Right-to-Know, parental involvement laws and to use taxpayer funds to pay for abortion-on-demand. Our education programs include the annual Oratory Contest and Camp Joshua, our pro-life camp for Virginia teens.
Which is why we absolutely must meet this deadline to ensure we receive the full $26,000 Matching Fund.

November 8, 2017
2017 Election results mean hard work ahead for Pro-lifers in the Commonwealth of Virginia
The Virginia Society for Human Life is saddened by the losses yesterday in the statewide races. The three great pro-life leaders–Ed Gillespie, who ran for governor, Jill Vogel, who ran for Lt. Governor, and Attorney General candidate John Adams–ran strong races and were prepared to do all that they could to protect innocent human life from fertilization to natural death.
VSHL is aware that Governor-elect Ralph Northam and returning incumbent Attorney General, Mark Herring are equally committed to expanding the abortion agenda in Virginia. It can be assumed that together with pro-abortion Lt. Governor -elect Justin Fairfax, they will work to dismantle every pro-life law in Virginia. Pro-life Virginians have reason to be worried.
“It’s simple,” said Olivia Gans Turner, President of VSHL. “When Planned Parenthood celebrates, it means more unborn babies are going to die and more mothers will be left in pain for a lifetime. The millions of dollars they poured into this race paid off and innocent lives will suffer as a result.”
Gans Turner added, “VSHL wishes to extend our congratulations to every pro-life candidate that won Tuesday. May you remain steadfast to your commitment to protect innocent human life regardless of the upcoming challenges. Pro-life voters are grateful.”
There were a few very tight races whose outcomes may not be decided for a day or two. VSHL will wait to respond to the final head count in the House of Delegates until they are resolved, hoping that the House will remain held by pro-life Republicans.
The next four years will call upon the deepest commitment of pro-life people in the Commonwealth to defend the protection of unborn children, those living with disabilities and the vulnerable elderly from life threatening activity in Virginia. We must work together to prevent the advancement of new pro-abortion legislation by a pro-abortion governor and a House of Delegates with decidedly more pro-abortionists.

Virginia General Assembly Recognizes Virginia Society for Human Life 50th Anniversary
Today, prior to the Reconvene Session of the 2017 Virginia General Assembly, a House Joint Resolution, HR1025, patroned by Delegate Jimmie Massie, R-72, (see attached) was presented to the representatives of the Virginia Society for Human Life. Today, Governor McAuliffe has vetoed a common sense bill that would have ensured that legitimate Virginia healthcare programs that do not perform or promote abortion received priority state funding before any organization that does abortions.
This bill, HB-2264, patroned by Delegates Ben Cline and Dave LaRock, was designed to support state programs that actually do provide women with prenatal care and other much need health services under Medicaid and to get the Commonwealth of Virginia out of the business of abortion. Sadly, once again we see that the Governor's commitment to his pro-abortion political backers takes precedence over the will of the people of Virginia who do not want their taxes paying to support abortions or abortion promoters like Planned Parenthood.
Growing evidence suggests that the only thing that the women of Virginia can find at these abortion facilities is an abortion. None of Planned Parenthood's Virginia locations offer prenatal care.
Virginia Society for Human Life is not surprised that Terry McAuliffe has sided with his pro-abortion allies.
"He has proven for the last four years that Planned Parenthood and the abortion lobby can depend on him to abandon the women and unborn children of the Commonwealth every time," said Olivia Gans Turner, President of Virginia Society for Human Life. "Now he is proving that he does not care that Virginians do not want our taxes paying for abortion either. This is solid evidence that Virginia needs a pro-life governor to respect the action of Virginia's elected officials and the will of the people of this state."

This week at the General Assembly, it was decided by the Chairman of the House Courts of Justice Committee to lay aside the Pain Capable Unborn Child Protection bill, HB-1473 due to fears that the bill would not be able to successfully survive a possible challenge in the Virginia Senate and an absolutely certain veto by pro-abortion Governor McAuliffe.
There is great optimism that the bill will be able to pass out of the General Assembly without significant or weakening amendments next year. The real hope is that there will also be a pro-life governor elected this November who will sign it into law, so that Virginia can be counted among those states that are currently protecting helpless unborn children capable of feeling pain from a horrific death by abortion.
VSHL remains committed to working closely with pro-life legislators at the General Assembly to move this bill forward in the very near future. Please remember to thank your legislator if he or she signed on as a co-patron this session. If not, please make it your duty to ask for their support next year.
It is essential that we all keep talking to neighbors, family and friends about this life saving bill which will protect some of the most vulnerable among us. There is more info on the VSHL website and our Facebook page.
Please help VSHL spread the word.
Thank you all,

This is it!
The 2017 Virginia General Assembly gets underway tomorrow. This year is a "short session" due to the election year, so we have a very tight window, only 45 days, to try and get things done to save unborn babies!
Have you contacted your Delegate and Senator yet to ask for their support of HB 1473, the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act?
One of the most important things they can do to help move this bill forward successfully this year is to become a co-patron of the bill. They may not do so if they don't think you support this bill too!
Yes, it is true that Virginia's current outspoken pro-abortion governor has made it very clear that he intends to veto this and any other pro-life legislation that might get to his desk. Well let's call him on it!
In a poll taken on election night it became obvious that there is a powerful majority in favor of legislation like this that can protect the lives of babies old enough to feel pain in the womb by 20 weeks. Gov. McAuliffe is out of step with 64% of Americans who support this kind of law, as well as 74% of millennials, 67% of women, 70% of Black Americans and 57% of Hispanic voters.
Let's make sure our voices are added to that support at the General Assembly this week.
It is so easy for you to connect with your legislators. Please use this link to find yours and email them or place a quick call. Each call is counted and they do matter!
Please remember that you can support the work of VSHL lobbying team as well by making a donation to the Legislative fund. We are so grateful for you continued help! you can make a donation here.
Let's make our voices heard loud and clear that we want to see stronger life saving laws like HB 1473 passed! Let's work together and move this game-changing legislation one step closer to being signed into law!
Thank you, Olivia Gans Turner President, Virginia Society for Human Life
Let's send a clear message to McAuliffe & Northam!
Do you know how pro-abortion Virginia's Lt. Governor, Ralph Northam is? Well, he just made public comments opposing the latest version of the Pain Capable Unborn Child Act which was just signed in to law in Ohio!
Apparently, he has no compassion for the helpless little unborn children who suffer the horrific death cause by abortion. Lt. Gov. Northam is using is position to generate opposition in Virginia to efforts of pro-life legislators to pass this protective law. His comments to a Virginia Democratic group are full of typical fear mongering and false narratives regarding this legislation.
Why you ask? Well, looking at his perfect pro-abortion voting record while in the Virginia Senate it is clear that he is in the pocket of the abortion industry, just like Gov. McAuliffe! Together they will work harder than ever to prevent this important bill from passing in the General Assembly during the 2017 session.
This reasonable bill has already successfully enacted in 15 states. Unborn babies lives are being saved in those states and it is time for Virginia to see this happen here. By 20 weeks in the womb, medical science can measure the pain that the unborn can feel. The unborn's ability pain is so highly sensitive that what they feel is profoundly more excruciating that what you and I feel, yet, abortionists claim this science is bogus. These laws cut into the abortion industry's profit and so they and their lackey's in the General Assembly will oppose this bill with all their might.
Won't you please help us hold strong against these attacks?
The 2017 General Assembly will begin on January 11, 2017. Del. LaRock, (R-33) has submitted the new bill. It is so important that our legislators show their support for this bill, HB-1473. They can do that best by becoming a co-patron. Your phone calls and emails right now will show them that there is public support for the Pain Capable Unborn Child Protection Act here in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
Pro-abortion forces are already contacting the Members' offices. I know it's Christmas time but we must do all that we can right away to make sure that our elected officials don't think we want them to sit out another session because of pro-abortion opposition. Let's ask them to send a clear message to pro-abortion Lt. Governor Northam and Gov. McAuliffe that they can't stop pro-life laws by making speeches and threatening vetoes.
It only take a couple of minutes to send and email or call an leave a message. You can use this link to help you find the information you need to contact your legislators today!
Remember, it will take a great deal to communicate with the public about this bill. Your contributions now help VSHL do the hard work needed in Richmond and around Virginia.
Thank you and many hopes for you and yours at this season!

Protects Unborn Babies Who Can Feel Pain from Abortion
Yesterday, on the anniversary of the Roe v. Wade decision, the Virginia Society for Human Life announced that the Pain Capable Unborn Child Protection Act (HB2321) has been introduced by Del. David A. LaRock (R-33) into this year’s General Assembly.
This important bill will prevent abortions in Virginia after the point in pregnancy when medical science has determined that an unborn child can feel pain. These unborn babies should be protected under the law from the excruciating pain caused by abortion.
Pro-life Virginians have done so much to move this Commonwealth to becoming one that respects and saves even the smallest and most vulnerable lives. Recent Virginia statistics indicate that abortion rates are coming down. Many of those numbers reflect the effect of the reasonable and protective laws we have seen passed in the General Assembly.
We continue to face new challenges to ensure that innocent lives are once again protected under the law.Unborn children and their mothers are still threatened by aggressive and dangerous abortion promoters throughout Virginia.
“The passage of the Pain Capable Unborn Child Protection Act will save these precious unborn babies from a horrific death at the hands of abortionists. It is the humane thing to do,” said Olivia Gans Turner.
Virginia Society for Human Life is the first statewide pro-life organization in the Country and the Virginia affiliate of National Right to Life Committee.
The effort to undermine the protective and reasonable abortion facility regulations called for by the Virginia General Assembly in 2011 continue to be under attack from Virginia's pro-abortion Governor, Terry McAuliffe and the radically pro-abortion individuals he has recently appointed to the state Board of Health. He is clearly committed to following through on his campaign promises to the abortion lobby! Please read this important story from NRL News with more details on what Gov. McAuliffe is trying to do.
The next public hearing on this matter will be on Dec. 4th. Before then we must educate our neighbors about the ugly facts behind the closed doors of abortion facilities all over Virginia! While abortion will never be made safe because a baby dies in ever one, the governor must not be allowed to over rule the will of the people as voted on by the General Assembly four years ago.
Ask Gov. McAuliffe to stop protecting the abortion industry and protect the women of this state from reckless abortionists!

Here is the statement Virginia Society for Human Life before the Virginia Board of Health in support of the abortion facility regulations.
June 5, 2014
Good morning Dr. Levine, Mr. Chairman, and members of the Virginia Board of Health.
I am Maggie Disney of Richmond with the Virginia Society for Human Life. VSHL is very hopeful that the sensible and protective abortion facility regulations will be maintained by the members of the Board of Health.
The ramification of reversing the regulations will put women's safety at even greater risk of harm beyond the common risks always present in every abortion experience. Abortion is a tragedy which takes the life of an unborn child and without regulations, places the well being of women in great peril as well.
The evidence of recent investigations around Virginia indicate that the abortion industry is not regulating itself, so it is the responsibility of the Board of Health to follow through with these reasonable efforts as directed by the General Assembly in 2011.
Virginia Society for Human Life supports the wise and protective measures provided under the Informed Consent statute to protect the women of this great Commonwealth.

Mark Herring puts abortion agenda over duty to rape victims
The Attorney General of Virginia, Mark Herring, has issued a deeply disturbing decision regarding the responsibility of Virginia abortion facility staff to report incidents of the rape of a minor age girl before performing an abortion on these young victims.
“This alarming decision on the part of the highest law enforcement official of the Commonwealth of Virginia proves without a doubt that elections have serious consequences. Attorney General Herring had a long record in the Virginia Senate of supporting abortion providers over the need to protect women and their unborn children. Now Virginians see that as Attorney General, he will continue to serve the interests of the abortion industry and those who commit acts of violence upon young girls.” said Olivia Gans Turner, VSHL President.
The decision, which was released two days before the last Virginia Board of Health meeting in September, rejects two previous decisions of prior Virginia Attorneys General that recognized the need to protect minors from sexual predators by reporting rape to the authorities.
Abortion promoters, such as Planned Parenthood, have a record of ignoring regulations like these and will continue to do so as long as pro-abortion elected officials continue to turn a blind eye. This is the real war on women!
The upcoming elections provide Virginians with the opportunity to make it clear that we do not appreciate pro-abortion politicians serving as cronies of the abortion industry. “It is vitally important that all Virginians know which candidates are pro-life and vote for them on Nov. 4th!.” Gans Turner added.

Virginia Senate Majority Rejects Repeal of Protective Ultrasound Law
Due to a random procedural mistake in the voting process, the Senate of Virginia today repealed the state’s ultrasound law by default. However, one pro-life Senator, Chuck Colgan, D-29, accidently voted incorrectly during a second round of voting on the bill, SB 617. That caused a tie vote which was broken by pro-abortion Lieutenant Governor Ralph Northam who cast his vote to repeal the protective law. An attempt to correct that mistake was rejected by a procedural vote. Thus a majority of the Senate rejects the repeal of the law.
“Pro-abortion forces in Virginia cannot rightfully claim victory on this matter since it has been made clear that if allowed to, the majority of Senators would have voted against this bill to repeal the ultrasound law,” said Olivia Gans Turner, VSHL President.
This bill, SB 617 will now be sent to the House of Delegates after Crossover on February 11th. Virginia Society for Human Life is hopeful that the House of Delegates will act to protect this reasonable pro-life law.
“Today’s attempt to repeal this important law is not in the best interest and well-being and rights of women,” said Gans Turner, VSHL President “Requiring that all abortionists perform an ultrasound allows women the best chance possible of getting all the facts they need about their unborn child before making the life and death decision of abortion.”
VSHL is very pleased that on another issue, in a vote that was a truer reflection of the pro-life majority in the Senate, SB 618 did not pass. That bill that would have reversed the law that prevents Virginia tax funds from paying for abortions under new health care exchanges. Two pro-life Democrats voted with the Republicans on that issue. “Virginia taxpayers have long opposed efforts to force them to pay for abortions. The current law respects that position.” Turner said.
