VSHL Endorses Safe Haven Legislation

Abandonment of newborn babies has become an increasing problem in recent years. Many of these babies soon die for various reasons. Often the mothers are frightened or confused.

Taking note of these facts, the VSHL Board has given strong support for safe haven legislation that would provide a method for such a mother to relinquish her newborn anonymously into a safe location, such that she would not be subject to criminal prosecution. Passage of such legislation could allow a greater opportunity for these babies to survive. They would also have better health because of the care and assistance they would receive.

At its meeting on January 6, 2001, the Board passed a resolution that strongly encouraged the Virginia General Assembly to pass appropriate legislation for this purpose.
