VSHL Board Safe Haven Resolution

Whereas the abandonment of newborn infants is apparently occurring with some frequency in our country, and could result in infanticide, and

Whereas many of these babies, thus abandoned soon die from various causes and,

Whereas the mothers/parents of these infants are likely frightened, confused and misguided, and

Whereas the current cultural climate in this country which accepts the destruction of unborn children has quite likely resulted in a growing disregard for newborn infants as well, and

Whereas these babies could, with appropriate legislation, in many instances by provided a greater opportunity for survival and good health because of care and assistance,

Therefore, VSHL supports and strongly encourages the Virginia General Assembly to pass appropriate legislation that would permit, without criminal prosecution, anonymous relinquishment of newborns into some safe location.
