PASSAGE OF INFORMED CONSENT
IS A TRIUMPH FOR THE WOMEN OF VIRGINIA
The Virginia Society for Human Life applauds the Virginia Senate for
passing the Woman's Right to Know - Informed Consent legislation, patroned by
Delegate Robert F. McDonnell (R) of Virginia Beach on a vote of 24-15.
There is an identical bill in the House, SB 1211, patroned by Senator J.
Randy Forbes (R) of Chesapeake.
"Without full disclosure 'choice' is only a political slogan.
Advocates of legal abortion who are truly 'pro-choice' will welcome this
legislation," said Fiona Givens, VSHL Legislative Chairman. "It guarantees
women access to the facts, information and options that are essential
components of genuine 'choice'," continued Givens.
Virginia joins the other fifteen states that have passed informed
consent laws with reflection periods similar to this bill.
"The twenty-four hour reflection period is a crucial part of this
legislation. It allows the woman some time to weigh her decision and its
alternatives," stated Louise D. Hartz, VSHL President.
The Virginia Society for Human Life is the state affiliate of the National Right to Life Committee.
