National Right to Life Endorses Jerry Kilgore for GovernorThis is a release from the National Right to Life Committee (NRLC), issued Wednesday, June 22, 2005. The National Right to Life Committee (NRLC) today announced its endorsement of Jerry Kilgore for Governor of the Commonwealth of Virginia. Carol Tobias, Political Director for NRLC, stated, "The endorsement reflects our appreciation for the strong stand Jerry Kilgore has taken on behalf of those members of our human family who are least able to protect themselves. He has stood in defense of both unborn children and the medically disabled whose lives are threatened by abortion or euthanasia." In 2001, when Timothy Kaine was running for Lt. Governor, the Washington Post wrote that Kaine "opposes efforts to restrict abortions" and that he "opposes efforts to require a parent's consent before a minor gets an abortion." During the current campaign for Governor, Kaine states that he supports restrictions on abortion and supports parental consent for minors. Tobias commented, "When Timothy Kaine was running for Lt. Governor, he supported abortion. Four years later, after seeing pro-abortion Democrats continue to lose election after election, Mr. Kaine now sings a different tune. Kaine has begun to talk about "faith" and "values" in an attempt to make voters believe that his new-found support for limits on abortion is real. It isn't." Kaine also says that he supports a ban on partial-birth abortion with exceptions for the life and health of the mother. Adding "health" to Virginia's ban on this procedure is a smokescreen. In effect, it would allow any abortionist the right to perform partial-birth abortions simply by asserting that it would protect the emotional well-being of the mother. Tobias added, "The fact is, Timothy Kaine supports abortion on demand while Jerry Kilgore is pro-life. Currently in Virginia, abortion is being used as a method of birth control, with practically no limits whatsoever on the procedure. If any voter wants to support the candidate who opposes abortion on demand, who thinks parents have the right to be involved in their minor daughter's abortion decision, and who supports a true ban on partial-birth abortion, they should vote for Jerry Kilgore." NRLC is the nation's largest pro-life organization, with 50 state affiliates and approximately 3,000 local affiliates nationwide. NRLC works through legislation and education to protect those threatened by abortion, infanticide, euthanasia, and assisted suicide. VSHL is the Virginia affiliate of the National Right to Life Committee. |
